As some of you may know, I injured my knee on Easter Sunday. I saw a sports medicine orthopedist on Monday and he recommended a MRI. I went this morning to get the MRI, then went back to the doctor so he could look at the results with me. He had originally diagnosed it as a torn meniscus. He was correct, but both of my menisci are actually torn. A meniscus is one of the two main pieces of C-shaped cartilage in your knee. See below for a diagram. I went immediately from there to see a surgeon. I will be having surgery on my knee on Monday morning.
Here is a view from the front.
Here is a view of the lateral meniscus. It's hard to describe, but the black wedge shape is the meniscus. The gray line on the right half but inside the black is the tear. The surgeon will go in and cut out any loose dangling cartilage and just clean it up in general. I have actually had this procedure done on my other knee about 2 years ago.
Here is a view of the medial meniscus. The tear here is in quite a different spot. Fortunately, it is not very deep. The only way to repair this part of the meniscus is to stitch it up and hope it heals. It will be a game-time decision as to whether or not the surgeon decides to repair this or leave it be. This all depends on the severity of the tear. It's hard to really tell on a MRI. If he does this, my recovery will go from about 1 month to 3 months and I will be on crutches for a lot longer.
My injury occurred at the 2:04 mark in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os5hfJYa7Cc
Well that's all I've got. Wish me luck on Monday. And sorry if I made that sound like I was talking to a 5 year old; just trying to be thorough. |

There is a slot open on my crew if anyone is interested.
OK, lets be honest. With jpminter out, I have no crew. Where's that "legitimacy meter"? I think it just went to empty... |

JP........Damn, there was a whole lot of spinnage going on at 2:03! Best wishes on the game-time decision and recovery.
Dan.......do you really think anyone is going to ride with you after what you did to JP? That wake is evil! _________________ In great attempts, it is glorious even to fall. |

| skyskier, sorry, I can't take credit for that one. He was out w/ his VT buddies when that happened. I'm not certain, but I think it was behind an X1/X2/X-start/205V wake (ironically, his favorite wake). |

The double up of death was from an x-star (205v) with 2k ish in ballast and my double up driving. There was crazy stuff going on off the double ups that day, and the night before. The two double up at the 1:02 mark are mine.
Sorry Paul, I'll try and make the double ups smaller next time.Seriously though, speedy recovery. |

Sorry dude, not what you wanted I'm sure so early in the season, but here's to a speedy recovery and a late season to enjoy!
Btw, I tore my MCL 2 years ago snowboarding, it was a "level 2" tear. Basically it was up in the air as to whether or not I should have surgery, but I went the rehab route and am glad I did, I very rarely have issue with my knee, unless I case the wake too many times in one day..
Cheers! _________________ We may glow in the dark, but we can ride damn near year round. I for one love nuclear power, they distill the water before I swim in it, they even go so far as to keep it nice and heated, those Homer Simpson like folks are so good to us!

sp0tts, if they do the repair on my medial meniscus then it will be about 3 months until I am able to ride again. If they only do the meniscectomy on my lateral meniscus then I will only be out for about 1 month. I won't know what the doctor decides until I wake up afterwards.
And to top things off, some guy hit me head on in a 55mph zone on my way home from work this evening. My car is totaled. I'm OK though. |

HOLY CHRIST DUDE, I'm glad to hear you are ok.. Sounds like this isn't your month... If you need to get away from it all, come up to the lake and chill this weekend.. _________________ We may glow in the dark, but we can ride damn near year round. jpminter, even 3 months isn't too bad, timing isn't the best though. I went 6 - honestly crutches are the worst part I think. 1 month would be really sweet, but hopefully the doctor can make the right decision on whatever is best for your knee. Good luck with everything. If it's any consolation I have a friend who hurt his ankle last summer, got surgery in June and has to go back in b/c something's floating around in there. He probably won't be able to wakeboard this summer either. Surgery is never good, but it could be worse. Hope it goes well.
Also glad to hear your ok from the car, you've got a pretty unlucky streak goin right now. |

Quite the contrary, I'd say he's pretty damn lucky. Head on collision? Not many people survive those, let alone walk away from one.
Eh, you needed a new car anyway. Time to get that truck you'll need for towing your boat later in life... |

JP......on the plus side, sounds like you have all of the bad stuff outta the way for a while. ....and a new car coming! Hopefully you can at least do some surfing before long. Dare I mention how easy it is to ride a skyski with a bad knee? Yeah, I know......... _________________ In great attempts, it is glorious even to fall. |

| Yeah I was thinking the same thing Dan. Two torn menisci and NO ligament damage? And yeah both cars are totaled. It was some 18 year old kid. We both walked away. He had a cut on his hand. I have bruises all over my forearms and down to my hands. My ankle got crushed a little bit but other than that, I am fine. I'd say I got pretty lucky. |
