DCWake Reviews "The Chick Flick"

ImageWakeboarding videos aren't hard to come across these days. The industry has been flooded with everything from high budget, company sponsored DVDs to amateur handy cam filmed sessions available from WakePics.com. Enter DPC Films' Chick Flick: a feature length wakeboarding movie filled with chicks that are breaking the boundaries in women's wakeboarding. For the past year, Joe Umali and David Cervenka of DPC Films have been growing the buzz about the first all female flick since Beyond 3 in 1998. With 2 hi-res online teasers, a rider list with names like Dallas Friday, Emily Copeland-Durham, and Maeghan Major (amongst a list of 12), and shooting locations in California, Florida, Washington State, Nevada, and North Carolina guys and girls alike could tell this wasn't going to be your average wakeboarding flick.Right off the bat, before you even put the DVD into the player you can't help but to stop and checkout the packaging for the movie. Inside the DVD jacket (which has killer graphics) you'll find an assortment of stickers (DPC, Epic, and WakeWorld) and a 22 page booklet of pictures from the 8 month filming trip.
ImageWith the all star cast of riders, there's no denying that the riding is top notch - these chicks rip it just as hard as any pro on the circuit. With super technical moves like the Wrapped Mobe landed by Dallas Friday and the TS Off-Axis 720 landed by Amber Wing, any nay sayers will have their jaw on the ground in the first few minutes. This movie has big air, technical tricks, rails, wakeskating, wakesurfing so no matter what you like to see in a wakeboarding movie, this one has it. Even the crash section is worth watching over and over and over again - it's amongst the best ever (there's even a bloody nose).

The sound track is a psychedelic mix of Drum and base, hip hop, punk, jazz, classical guitars, and funk featuring artists like Currents, Zion I, Off the Mark, and Silberstein - there is even a track from Darin Shapiro! Each track seems to have been picked to match the style of each rider and conveys the laid back style of Joe and David.

Too many movie makers forget about one of the most important aspects of wakeboarding - the community. DPC Films hasn't forgotten about this including interviews with the riders, off water footage from the trips, and general goofing around with kangaroos, wakeskating in a skirt, skateboarding, and even some dirt bike riding.

Of course, great wakeboarding is nothing in a full feature flick without the talents of the film and editing crew. With innovative film techniques like mounting a 12 ft camera crane in the bow of a boat, the DPC Film crew has set a new bar with original shots, high quality video, and killer editing - did we mention this is their rookie full featured film? The DVD also include bonus features including extra footage from all the lake stops, interviews with the riders, the teasers, and a commercial from the title sponsor Epic Boats.

DCWake Reviews The Florida Wakeboard Camps - Trip 2

Ok, here we go again, the second installment of my wakeboard camp series. This article covers Rixen Cable Park, Lavelle Train Station (Dean Lavelle Wakeboard School), The Projects, and the Orlando Watersports Complex.

2006 Richmond Boat Show Review

This years Richmond Boat show was hosted at the Richmond Raceway just a couple blocks off of interstate 95. Getting down there was a breeze, 2 hours flew right by and we were there. The accommodations were nice, plenty of free parking, shuttle buses to transport us between the buildings, and plenty of signs to guide you around. All in all, it was really a great event.

DCWake Reviews The Florida Wakeboard Camps - Trip 1
This article is the first in a series that I intend to write about the Central Florida camps we all see advertised in the magazines. This article will focus on The Wakeboard Camp in Clermont and Orlando’s O’Town Watersports and Orlando Wakeboard Academy.  My aim for this series is to create as unbiased a resource for riders looking to find the best value for their money in the growing wakeboard camp industry in Central Florida.

2006 Fredericksburg Boat Show
This Friday through Sunday is the 2006 Fredericksburg boat show. Present for Wakeboarders will be Southern Ski Boats. More information is available on the show website. Alas, the folks from DCWake will not be able to make it. Should you go, please take some photos, we'd be happy to post them for you.
